KARANKAWA INDIANS

The Karankawa lived along the Texas Coast from Galveston Island to south of Corpus Christi and as far inland as Eagle Lake in present day Colorado County. The tribes were divided into major groups, Cujane, Guapite (Coapite), Coco, Copane, and Karankawa. The entire group eventually came to be known as Karankawa. The name Karankawa meant "dog lovers" in their own language. They were here when the earliest settlers arrived in the 1500's but were gone by the time of the Civil War. They and the immigrants to the area did not get along well. The Karankawa tried to protect their territory but the influx of Europeans was to much for them to handle. Between disease and the various wars against them they did not survive.
